A Digital Platform for Performing Arts Educators

This unique platform provides dance, drama, and music teachers with access to teachables, professional development, unit plans, and a variety of interactive tools. Our materials have been designed to enhance and supplement existing school programs around the globe. While the development of performance skills is invaluable, our materials emphasize building students’ personal artistry through their own creativity and bringing them into close contact with extraordinary works of music, dance, and drama.

Juilliard has designed teaching materials—creative activities, historical information, rehearsal strategies, and original media content—to lead students ages 4–18 through explorations of our Core Works. One of the unique features of Juilliard Creative Classroom is the infusion of “disciplinary thinking.” The lessons have been created using specific artistic practices that are authentic to each discipline, aligning students’ work with what happens in professional studios, rehearsal rooms, theaters, and concert halls.

Key Values

The Juilliard Approach to classroom instruction can be summarized in five key values:

  1. Success for all: Regardless of students’ career aspirations in the arts, Juilliard Creative Classroom materials are designed with the fundamental belief that all children have artistic capacities that can—and should—be developed beyond what they ever thought possible.
  2. Active and exploratory learning: Students, especially in the performing arts, learn best through exploration and hands-on application of artistic skills and concepts.
  3. Igniting creativity: It is vitally important to engage students in meaningful artistic experiences—ideally, their own experiences. Ownership of their learning helps students find their own artistic voice. Inviting students to think and work imaginatively can have lasting effects in all academic subjects.
  4. Inquiry and reflection: Fostering curiosity leads to student motivation, an impetus for hard work and achievement. Looking back on one’s experiences crystalizes learning and develops valuable metacognitive skills.
  5. Meaningful encounters with high-quality works of dance, drama, and music.
